ENERGY MANAGER

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for a ENERGY MANAGER at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position will have primary responsibility for: (1) negotiation and management of favorable energy purchase contracts for electric power and/or NG for a subset of North American facilities and (2) providing analytical, market intelligence, and other support activities required to improve the competitiveness and meet the energy supply needs of Air Products’ various new and potential plants in North America.

Specifically, this position will be responsible for:

• Overall management of energy procurement and support activities for a selection of 10-20 facilities in North America as well as other new facilities that Air Products may decide to construct in the future in the applicable geographies.
• Managing Air Products participation in Industrial Energy Users’ Groups that intervene in utility rate cases to minimize or eliminate increases in our power rates.
• Assisting in the analysis and development of continuous improvement suggestions for reliable, cost effective energy supply opportunities based on financial analysis; trend analysis of actual plant energy consumption and costs; and, applicable, available industry energy-related data.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. General responsibilities and performance requirements:
• Developing and maintaining, either directly or indirectly utilizing Corporate Energy Team members, ongoing relationships with each energy supplier that provides energy supply to a subset of Air Products facilities in North America.
• Developing and maintaining a general understanding of the local power and primary energy markets and energy regulations in the states where the assigned facilities are located.
• Utilizing resources to address specific energy problems as the need arises.
• Working with the business areas, supply chain, and operations to develop plant operating strategies that minimize total power and/or primary energy costs.
• Recognized (within and outside Company) as an authority on energy markets/economics for facilities and geographies that are assigned.
• Qualified to testify as an expert witness/spokesperson for the Company, as necessary.
• Selecting/managing outside consultants/legal support for purposes of energy purchases and regulatory intervention.
• Preparing, presenting, and defending Corporate Energy’s analysis/forecast of energy trends.

2. Additional responsibilities in regulated power markets:
• Understanding each power supplier’s available rate options and working with the relevant Air Products business area and operations personnel to insure that Air Products’ facilities are always on the lowest rate available to us and that we are minimizing power costs whenever possible.
• Providing an early warning for proposed changes in power rates and conveying upcoming rate changes to the relevant business area/operations affected by them.
• Negotiating energy purchase and sales contracts and performing required ongoing supply contract administration activities.
• Exercising influence in the applicable political and regulatory rate setting processes.

3. Additional responsibilities in primary energy and deregulated power markets:
• Understanding energy market conditions, rules, and capabilities and offerings of competitive suppliers.
• Conducting required procurement RFPs, evaluating the results, and recommending the evaluated “low-cost/high service” provider.
• Leading the negotiation of the necessary power/primary energy supply contracts with the selected supplier.
• Performing required ongoing nominating/scheduling/contract administration activities as required.

4. Development of new facilities and strategic planning:
• Assisting in Air Products’ project development efforts in North America by providing input for strategic planning and proposed plants such as:
- Applicable power/primary energy prices/rates.
- Long term supply and reliability of the primary energy and local power supply.
- Interconnection/transportation options.
• Participating in new project design/construction/operation by providing:
- Single point of contact with the local utility/energy supplier.
- Insight into possible ways to obtain the most favorable energy rate possible.
- Negotiation of the required power/primary energy supply contract, transportation and dispatch agreements.

5. Invoice Verification and Power Cost Budgeting:
• Managing monthly energy invoice verification for all applicable facilities.
• Providing annual power cost forecasts in support of the annual budgeting process, business development, and plant modification/operations activities.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree in Science and/or Engineering preferred, MBA desirable.
• 5-10 years experience in the primary (natural gas and coal) and/or electric (both regulated and deregulated) energy industries desirable.
• Self-disciplined, self-motivated, demonstrated ability to work effectively with minimal direction, and good analytical skills with capability of detailed analysis of a complex nature and able to provide summary/recommendations regarding findings.
• Demonstrated prioritization, planning, and follow-up skills in a multi-tasking environment.
• Demonstrated commercial skills with understanding of risk mitigation strategies.
• Capable of handling detailed and complex contract negotiations.
• Able to freely travel within North America.
