Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, is seeking an experienced Operations Leader to become a Black Belt for its Western Region facilities.
This is a development position for Operations Leadership for Air Products’ Western Region Tonnage Gas business. The incumbent will be expected to become a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt for 18-36 months and then move to a leadership position consistent with their experience at one of Air Products’ West Coast facilities.
BlACK BELT ACCOUTABILITIES (immediate):
The primary accountability of this position is to drive achievement of corporate Continuous Improvement (CI) program goals by leading Lean Six Sigma (LSS) improvement projects which follow the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) or DMADV (Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Validate) methodology and make use of the full suite of CI tools including foundational through advanced tools. The successful candidate will be required to take Air Products internal Lean Six Sigma course and successfully perform 2 certification projects under close scrutiny to achieve internal certification. After certification, the Black Belt will be expected to execute several projects concurrently and/or coach new Green Belts or Black Belts in region until an appropriate Operations Leadership position is available. (In rare cases, the incumbent may continue in the Continuous Improvement Center of Excellence as a Tool Expert or CI Manager).
The Black Belt is focused on leading process improvement projects through the use of the CI methodology and tools so that assigned improvement objectives are achieved. The Black Belt is able to motivate, energize and execute change initiatives. The Black Belt serves as a change facilitator, internal CI tool mentor and coach to drive CI projects on an ongoing basis. The Black Belt will spend approximately 80% of their time leading Lean Six Sigma improvement project execution. Additionally the Black Belt will replicate successful projects by working with Functional Managers, CI Managers, MBBs and other Black Belts via the use of well documented projects and proper updates to project tracking systems.
BLACK BELT DIMENSIONS: • Demonstrate knowledge of the DMAIC methodology and the Lean and Sigma tool sets via successful project execution. • Achieve certification based on requirements defined. • 80 % time spent leading Lean and Sigma project execution and 20 % time spent on broader CI initiatives such as planning, metric development, change management, program management, etc. • Once certified and licensed to coach, coach/mentor 5+ Yellow/Green Belts, and other Black Belts in training • Improvement Measures: Accountable for demonstrating knowledge of DMAIC methodology and use of Lean and Sigma tools to achieve defined improvement goals. Estimated targets will be to directly deliver $0.5-$1.0MM of annual cost improvement hard benefits.
BLACK BELT JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS: • Bachelors degree in engineering or related field or equivalent education, technical training and experience • External candidates: Certified Lean Six Sigma Black or Green Belt preferred; Internal Candidates: LSS Certified preferred but not required • Proven experience leading projects and coaching and developing resources; supervisory experience valued • Ability to deal with ambiguity • Project management skills including oversight of project team, resource identification, budgets, scheduling and planning • Possess strong influencing, coaching, communication and facilitative skills • Ability to bring teams together to achieve targets and goals • Ability to diagnose and affect cultural change in moderate to difficult circumstances
Operations Leadership (future position):
When the Black Belt transitions to an Operations Leadership position (e.g., Site Supervisor, Site Manager etc.) the incumbent will be expected to be responsible and accountable for the EH&S performance, manufacturing operations and reliability of facilities. Operations Leadership positions objectives are to coordinate production and maintenance activities to meet customer requirements at the lowest total cost. The expectation is that the experience of performing Black Belt duties will enable the incumbent to perform those duties in a superior fashion.
To be qualified for an Operations Leadership position, the incumbent will be required to develop these dimensions: • Effective Communications skills • Experience in Air Separation and/or Hydrogen/CO plant operations and distribution • Successful track record or aptitude in Environmental, Health, Safety, and Quality • Demonstrated managerial leadership and interpersonal skills • Strong commitment to employee involvement, team building and diversity • Demonstrated commitment to asset management programs and productivity improvement
Future Operations Leadership Qualifications/Requirements (can be developed during Black Belt assignment): • 7+ years of industrial experience including supervision • Ability to interface with senior customer representatives and community leaders • Demonstrated commitment to EH&S • Self-starter with proven leadership abilities • Experience in process plant operation / maintenance • Strong organizational skills
