LEAD MATERIALS ENGINEER

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for a LEAD MATERIALS ENGINEER at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The Materials Engineer is responsible for the reliable and safe operation of our facilities through the performance of key activities including:
- Recommending materials of construction based on process conditions including fluids handled, pressure, temperature, etc. Familiarity with materials selection for oxidizer services such as high pressure oxygen is required.
- Conducting failure analyses to determine root causes for equipment failure in service and providing material recommendations or plant operation modifications to avoid a recurrence of the failure.
- Providing materials consulting and advice to Air Products operating facilities on issues such as welding, heat treating, corrosion performance, materials properties (e.g., high temperature creep properties, low temperature toughness), etc.
- Developing and overseeing testing protocols to determine viability and limitations of materials for new and existing process applications.

Qualifications:
- Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Materials/Metallurgical Engineering (advanced degree preferred) with 10-15 years related experience.
- Experience in the industrial gas, power, petrochemical, or chemicals process industry is required.
- Must have a comprehensive understanding of basic corrosion and failure mechanisms.
- Must have the ability to identify microstructures and fracture morphologies of a wide variety of alloy systems and an in-depth understanding of alloy systems as related to materials of construction.
- Looking for an engineer with good verbal and written communication skills to be able to interface with engineers, plant personnel, and outside labs and consultants.
- Familiarity with the following items will also be a plus:
- ASME, ASTM, and API standards and codes
- Materials use publications by organizations such as NACE, MTI, and CGA
- Risk based inspection and fitness for service methodologies
- Continuous Improvement (CI) or other similar methodology
- Oxidizer safety and related applications
- Non-destructive test methods
- Properties and use of elastomers and plastics

Approximately 10% travel required, some international.
