Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE:APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an opening beginning April 1, 2012, for an experienced Plant Operator at its Convent, Louisiana facility.
Description of Position:
This operator will be one of a two-man team that will take on full day-to-day responsibility for preparing and operating the Ion Transport Membrane (ITM) 100-TPD Oxygen Test Unit. This plant is the first-time scale-up of the ITM technology to near-commercial scale, and the purpose of the plant is to test the membrane technology within a large-scale equipment setting. The operator will work directly with an experienced lead process research & development engineer, but will maintain line management with Global Operations.
Initial responsibilities will include participation in the start-up and commissioning activities including assisting the engineer in preparing the ITM vessel for confined-space vessel entry, and installation of the specialty membrane modules. The operator will start-up, operate, and shutdown the plant along with the engineer. Off-hours plant surveillance will be accomplished by other on-site operators. However, when process trips or upsets occur, the ITM operator will be expected to (when necessary) go to the plant and assist the engineer in assessing the situation and recovering the plant. The operator will also be expected to coordinate with Global Maintenance and contractors to maintain and make repairs or modifications to the plant.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• High School Diploma/GED/Degree in Process Technology is preferred
• Knowledgeable in Confined Space Entry procedures, and willing to work within a confined space
• Preferably at least 10 years experience in operation and maintenance of large commercial process machinery (compressors), equipment (fired heaters), instrumentation (thermocouples, O2 analyzers), and Distributed Control Systems (PCS7)
• Skilled in troubleshooting process, equipment, and instrumentation issues
• Willing and able to work with hands in handling specialized components and tools
• Ability to work independently or with general guidance only
• Proficient in communication tools and skills (phone, email, IM, text messaging, Live Meeting, Sharepoint)
• Must be willing to take 24 hour on-call responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Participate in the basic safety process as a key member of the sites safety committee and sharing responsibility for the site’s overall safety performance.
• Follow Operating procedures
• Provide troubleshooting expertise for the production units
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to manage confined space entry, climb ladders and steps and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Will be exposed to high noise levels (hearing protection provided).
• Be able to meet call-in requirements as needed.
• Elevated work required.
