LEAD SYSTEMS ENGINEER (CFD)

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for a LEAD SYSTEMS ENGINEER – Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

This position is located in our Computational Modeling Center (CMC), a technology center-of-excellence providing modeling and analytics solutions for the global organization. CMC is part of Global Technology Centers (GTC) organization which provides shared and connected unique technology resources across the Air Products Enterprise to speed-up technology innovation and problem-solving for our businesses. The Lead Systems Engineer is a member of a highly specialized staff of professionals who proactively provide mathematical modeling and simulation consulting/analysis services primarily to plant engineers, research scientists, marketing and business managers. This position reports to the Manager of the Computational Modeling Center.

The incumbent is responsible for developing, conducting, and participating in technical studies involving chemical process development with emphasis on robust equipment design, scale-up, engineering optimization, and system retrofitting, through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and advanced transport modeling.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide support for process/application development through the combination of first principles engineering science models and computational techniques
• Perform simulations for equipment design, performance improvement and optimization
• Develop mathematical and physical models, solve numerical problems, write specific code as needed, and effectively perform applications testing to ensure robust performance
• Provide technical support in CFD and computational engineering sciences to the technology and engineering groups
• Interact with marketing/commercial teams to provide project support
• Communicate technical results to a wide audience in a manner that the solution strategy and business impact are readily understood
• Work with external research groups to maintain our technology leadership
• Work with vendors to evaluate new solutions and technologies
• Participate in frequent reviews of CFD projects with business technology managers and business area managers.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Plant debottlenecking/expansion studies for improving efficiency, quality and cycle time optimization to support plant operations. Primarily project collaborations are with the technology, engineering, operations and business areas. The incumbent works independently on key projects, but most often participates in team efforts. In addition, it is important to seek out new application areas across all business sections within Air Products, where business needs and CFD capabilities can be brought together profitably and innovatively. A typical project will require the incumbent to understand a particular chemical process, aid in establishing the goals of simulation study, formulate a mathematical model to achieve those goals, decide on an appropriate method of analysis, and report the results in a clear fashion. The incumbent will collaborate across multi-functional teams, communicate regularly and effectively within the technical communities and business management teams, and manage a portfolio of projects with various durations, different technologies and risk profiles.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Position requires a Ph.D. in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering with background in fluid dynamics, engineering sciences and transport modeling
• 5-10 years of experience in industrial problem solving with emphasis on fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, and reacting systems
• Fluency in working and developing models in ANSYS/FLUENT or other CFD codes is a must
• Strong knowledge of the state-of-the-art methods in numerical analysis, simulation techniques, and process design
• Strong background in Process modeling, simulation and scaling analysis
• Experience with process simulation and CAD/CAE packages is a plus
• Strong programming skills
• Excellent communication skills.
