APPLICATION CHEMIST FOR COATINGS (ADTS)

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases and chemicals, has an immediate opening for an Application Chemist for Coatings at our Corporate Headquarters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

This position is for a Applications Chemist focusing in the area of Epoxy Coating Applications.

The incumbent is a scientist who will have responsibility to build and enhance our technical competency in the areas of product development and applications for two-component epoxy, amine cured coating systems. In addition, the individual is required to develop a deep understanding of our customers’ needs, market trends and drivers, and help to translate these into products development that promotes high value technology leveraging Air Products competitive advantages to market. The individual is required to plan and execute detailed technical projects in order to maintain the company’s leadership position in the development of new amine functional curing agent technology. In this position the individual will need to demonstrate the ability to work effectively within cross functional and regional teams, which will include representatives from R&D, Marketing and Sales functions.

New product initiatives play a vital role in the profitability of the business, therefore the incumbent needs to ensure a high level of focus is maintained in both the technical support and product promotion in order for these products to grow at above-average growth rates. Regular training sessions to promote new global and regional technical developments to the North American customer base, regional sales force and distributors is expected.

Principal Responsibilities:

- New product developments and data generation to support the development of new applications

- Broad communication of market needs, trends and drivers to the rest of the organization

- Provide technical service for specific customer in the region

- Develops a strong, independent working relationship with technology teams in North America, Europe and Asia groups

- Introduces/transfers applications technology into the regions that meets regional requirements, and interacts directly with the applications groups

- Maintains an in-depth awareness of new developments in one or more areas of expertise, including participation in external trade associations

- Coordinate and execute experimental (laboratory) work to support new product introduction or new application development

- Participate in the development and deployment of the Epoxy business strategy

- Participate as a member of the Americas Epoxy Technology Team. Take a leading role in helping the team in delivering according to the Technical Operating Plan objectives

- Participate as a member of the Epoxy Global and Regional Level

- Maintain contact and relations with key marketing and technical contacts in the USA Epoxy industry through regular contact and participation in industry events

- Together with the regional sales team and global marketing team, assist in the development and implementation of focus account plans. Maintain good working relationships with regional focus customers.

Qualifications/Experience:

- PhD or Masters degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or related subject.
- Minimum 5 yrs Industrial experience with proven track record in Product Development and Innovation
- Hands on experience for: Surface preparation to apply coatings, Coatings application: spray, roller, airless spray, etc.
- Good results interpretation on lab tests (physical, analytical and mechanical tests)
- Must be a team work player
- Self motivated
- Will be managed remotely
- Pro-active in raising and promoting technical ideas
- Problem solving skills
- Know customer-customer market
